Tomatoes!

Tomatoes are the most popular vegetable that gardeners grow each summer in Pennsylvania. What does determinate and indeterminate mean? Can tomatoes be grown in containers? When can they be planted? Do they need to be staked? Do they need to be pruned?

On April 28 at 6 PM, Master Gardener Barb Kline will explain how best to grow tomatoes in southwestern Pennsylvania, share her favorite varieties, and answer all your questions.

Barb Kline is an Allegheny Penn State Master Gardener.  She graduated from Phipps master gardener program in 2002 and joined Penn State master gardeners in 2009.  Barb co-owned and operated an organic urban farm in Pittsburgh for more than a decade. She had the honor of being invited to attend the second international Slow Food conference called Terra Madre in Turino, Italy in 2006. She continues to be inspired by this experience.  A passion stemming from the conference is helping preserve the genetic diversity of the seed supply by growing heirloom vegetables and saving seed. She has taught classes and lectured on a variety of sustainable gardening practices, including tomatoes.
